Sie könnten verschiedener nicht sein: die junge Yogalehrerin Dharma Finklestein und der karrierebewußte Yuppie Greg Montgomery. Eine unkonventionelle und eine wertkonservative Welt prallen aufeinander, als sich die beiden verlieben – und heiraten. Für beide Elternpaare eine Horrorvorstellung. Dharmas verrückte Freundin Jane und Gregs Freund und Anwaltskollege Pete vervollständigen das Quartett. Dharma Finklestein stößt in einer Justizbehörde auf den Anwalt Greg Montgomery. Die beiden verlieben sich auf Anhieb – und heiraten wenig später. Erst dann stellen sie fest, daß sie eigentlich ziemlich verschieden sind. Sowohl die Eltern von Greg als auch die Dharmas sind nicht gerade begeistert, als sie von der Eheschließung ihrer Sprößlinge hören. Dementsprechend verläuft das erste Treffen.
