Un giovane wavemaster, conosciuto solo con lo pseudonimo di Tsukasa, si sveglia in un MMORPG chiamato The World, con una leggera amnesia. Non sa cosa ha fatto in precedenza prima di svegliarsi. In The World, i Crimson Knights lo sospettano di essere un hacker, poiché è stato visto accompagnare un personaggio modificato nella forma di un gatto. Incapace di disconnettersi dal gioco, vaga in cerca di risposte, evitando i cavalieri e gli altri giocatori che incontra lungo la strada. Mentre Tsukasa esplora il mondo, si imbatte in un oggetto magico che assume la forma di un "guardiano", che gli promette protezione da ogni male. Subaru, il leader dei Crimson Knights, insieme a molti altri giocatori che hanno conosciuto Tsukasa, ha deciso di indagare sul motivo per cui Tsukasa non è in grado di disconnettersi e tentare di andare a fondo del problema prima che sfugga di mano.
