W bliżej niesprecyzowanej przyszłości ludzkość zostaje zmuszona do życia w odizolowanym od reszty świata kopuło-mieście Romdo, radzącym sobie z trudnym klimatem dzięki zaawansowanej technologii. Zamieszkujący je ludzie są stale kontrolowani, począwszy od rejestrowania wszelkich ich czynów po tak prozaiczne sprawy jak monitorowanie pulsu. Mimo ścisłego nadzoru pojawiają się problemy: wśród robotów-pomocników panuje zaraźliwy „wirus”, sprawiający, że stają się one bardziej ludzkie, budzi się w nich tożsamość i zaczynają mieć własne potrzeby, inne niż służenie ludziom, dla których zostały stworzone.
