Tomoya Okazaki to uczeń trzeciej klasy liceum, który jest rozżalony swoim życiem. Jego matka zginęła w wypadku samochodowym, gdy był jeszcze dzieckiem, co spowodowało, że jego ojciec zaczął sięgać po alkohol i papierosy. W efekcie między nimi dochodziło do częstych kłótni, aż w końcu w jednej z nich Tomoya doznał kontuzji ramienia. Od tamtej pory ma z ojcem chłodne stosunki, co z czasem skłoniło go do stania się chuliganem. Pewnego dnia, idąc do szkoły, spotyka dziwną dziewczynę o imieniu Nagisa Furukawa, która jest o rok starsza, ale powtarza rok ze względu na chorobę. Z tego powodu często jest sama, gdyż większość jej przyjaciół poszła już dalej. Dwójka zaczyna spędzać ze sobą czas i stopniowo, w miarę upływu czasu, Tomoya zauważa, że jego życie zmienia kierunek.
